Autumn

Autumn’s Portrait

Autumn is my Maine Coon kitten.  When I did this painting, she wasn’t my kitten and I didn’t think I’d be the lucky person to have her.  As it happened, she and her sister became my new family members a week after I met them.  I did this painting in December so I chose white poinsettias as a nod to the season.  The final framed painting went to hang at her breeder mom’s home.

Ruby

Ruby’s Portrait

I’ve had several pet portrait ideas featuring Ruby.  This one came from having to miss most of my October due to an aggressive sore throat and head cold.  As I got better I started feeling anxious and needed something to focus on that I enjoyed.  I had a good photo of Ruby with an ugly background that would be perfect to turn into a painting.  I missed mum planting season again, so I painted some mums with Ruby.

Hobbes

Hobbes’s Portrait

Hobbes had been hanging out on a restaurant porch for a week begging for someone to be his person and give him a new home.  Mom and I brought him home, gave him some food, and within minutes he had settled into one of the cat beds like he had been always been there.  Hobbes is the most affectionate cat I’ve ever known.  He loves being picked up and carried around.  Any time I hold him he gives me loads of chin rubs with his wet nose.  I had been wanting to do a huge portrait of him for a long time and I knew I wanted to use sunflowers because they look almost as bright and happy as Hobbes.

Cocoa

Cocoa’s Portrait

Cocoa snuck in through the cat door one very cold January night and decided this would be her new home despite having to share with other cats.  Mom found out eventually that she lived a few houses up the street but her people didn’t want her anymore.  Our win.  She is a very talkative and extremely sweet girl.  She must have her lap time every night.  Her favorite activity is carrying her fuzzy ball around the house after dark, howling like she has caught prey.  This painting was done as a surprise for Mom.

Tubby

Tubby’s Portrait

Tubby appeared in the backyard at the start of Thanksgiving weekend, 2006.  He decided the food was good and the house suitable, so he stayed.  I named him Tubby because he was the fattest kitten I had ever seen.  He also has the most stunning tabby colors and markings I’ve ever seen.  He’s got that ‘Big Kitty’ personality and weighing 20lbs reinforces the attitude.  His expression is usually an unamused stare.  He has to do his daily patrols around the yard, no matter the weather.  In the winter he will walk around covered in snowflakes, completely oblivious to them.  I wanted to do a wintery portrait and I knew he would be the perfect subject.
