Snowy Southern Lights Stroll at the Kentucky Horse Park

I volunteered to photograph the Southern Lights Stroll at the Kentucky Horse Park. This year we happened to have one of the first heavy snowfalls. It made the park look enchanting so I didn’t mind the challenge it imposed on my camera. I wrapped it in its camera raincoat and away we went.

The Southern Lights Stroll is a very energetic night. There’s always a big crowd and everyone is excited to see the lights turned on for the holiday season. Lots of walkers bring their cute little pups. While there are some true competitors out there, the Stroll also great for any age. There is plenty of time to go at your own pace and enjoy the lights.

My favorite section is the 12 Days of Chrismas. Each lyric is depicted by a gigantic light display. It may take a while, but a lot of people like to sing along as they count the days. There are so many other wintery scenes. Some animate horses running through the snow, or feature the famous horses at the park.

When I crossed the finish, my gloved fingers were so frozen I couldn’t feel my camera buttons. As someone who likes to stay in during winter, the beauty of the Southern Lights Stroll is one activity that will get me excited to be out on a freezing night.
